Surfing Tanjung Aan: A Surf Guide to Kuta Lombok
If you tell someone you're going surfing in Kuta Lombok, there is one thing worth knowing before you even start talking about waves: Kuta and Tanjung Aan are not the same place.
Kuta is the main surf town on Lombok's south coast. It is where many travellers stay, where you'll find hotels, restaurants, surf shops and plenty of scooters with boards strapped to the side. Tanjung Aan is a beach and surf area further east along the coast, around 15 minutes from Kuta by car or scooter. The two are connected by a good paved road, so staying in Kuta and surfing Tanjung Aan is an easy combination. You don't need to move hotels or disappear into a remote corner of Lombok to get there.
The short drive is also a nice reminder of how quickly South Lombok changes once you leave town. Kuta's shops and restaurants give way to open views, hills and coastline, until eventually you arrive at a wide bay with white sand and remarkably turquoise water.
And then comes the slightly confusing part for first-time visitors.
You might look at the calm water close to shore and wonder: where exactly are we supposed to surf?
The answer is: further out.

Tanjung Aan Beach and the Tanjung Aan surf spot are not quite the same thing
Tanjung Aan is a large, horseshoe-shaped bay made up of two adjoining sections of beach, separated by a rocky headland. It is known for its white sand and clear water and is worth visiting even if you have no intention of touching a surfboard. The main surf break, however, sits well away from the beach, over reef further out in the bay. Surf guides describe the main wave as an A-frame, which means that under the right conditions waves can peel both left and right from the peak.
This is one of the things that makes surfing Tanjung Aan feel very different from learning at a beach break where you simply walk into the whitewater from shore. At Tanjung Aan, getting to the surf spot is part of the experience.
Technically, you can paddle out. The break is far enough offshore, however, that specialist surf guides estimate the paddle at around 15 to 20 minutes depending on your fitness and the conditions. We strongly prefer taking a local boat instead. It gets you to the break comfortably and, more importantly, means you haven't used a large part of your energy before your actual surf session has even started.
When you book a Tanjung Aan surf lesson with Surf With Aldo, the boat is already included in your lesson price. There is no separate boat fee waiting for you at the beach.
You arrive, get ready, go through the necessary instruction and safety information and then head out together.
Save the paddling for the waves.
What is surfing at Tanjung Aan like?
Tanjung Aan is often mentioned as one of South Lombok's more approachable surf options. When the conditions are suitable, its rolling waves can work very well for beginners, progressing surfers and longboarders. Several specialist surf guides identify the break as suitable for beginner to intermediate surfers in the right conditions, while also noting the reef below and the fact that the character of the wave changes with swell and tide.
That last part matters.
Calling somewhere a beginner surf spot does not mean it is a beginner surf spot every hour of every day. Tanjung Aan still faces the Indian Ocean. Swell changes, wind changes, tides move and conditions that are fun and forgiving one day can be considerably more challenging another day.
That is why we don't like giving one fixed answer to the question: What time should I surf Tanjung Aan?
The better question is: When should I surf Tanjung Aan today, at my level?
Before confirming a lesson, we look at the tide, swell and general conditions and consider the experience of the surfer. Someone standing on a surfboard for the first time needs a very different session from someone who already catches green waves independently. A five-year-old trying a tandem ride needs something different again.
For our lessons, we therefore confirm the exact starting time around two to three days beforehand. It might feel easier to plan your holiday around a fixed 10:00 surf lesson three weeks in advance, but the ocean isn't particularly interested in your calendar.

Kuta Lombok is the base. The waves are all around it.
This is perhaps one of the biggest differences between a surf trip to Kuta Lombok and staying somewhere like Canggu in Bali.
In Canggu, you can stay a few streets behind Batu Bolong, walk towards the ocean with your board and surf almost immediately. In Kuta Lombok, the town is better thought of as your base for exploring the south coast.
Tanjung Aan lies to the east. Continue further and you reach Gerupuk, another major surfing area where multiple breaks sit inside and around the bay, many of them reached by traditional boats. Head in other directions from Kuta and you'll find still more surf spots, each with different exposure, waves and conditions.
That geography is part of surfing Lombok. You don't necessarily surf the wave closest to your hotel. You look at the conditions and decide where it makes sense to go.
For Surf With Aldo, Tanjung Aan is our main Lombok surf location, but depending on a surfer's level and the conditions, Gerupuk can sometimes be the better choice.
It is less about having one favourite wave and more about finding the right wave for that session.
Your first surf session at Tanjung Aan
If you're completely new to surfing, the session starts before we get anywhere near the main break. There are a few things you need to understand on land first: how to position yourself on the board, how to pop up, how to fall safely, how to handle your board and what your instructor expects from you once you're in the water.
Then we take the boat out.
For many first-time surfers, that short ride is the moment the session suddenly feels real. The beach gets smaller behind you, boards are on the boat and you begin to see the waves breaking further out in the bay.
Once you're at the surf spot, the goal depends entirely on where you're starting from. A complete beginner may spend the session learning to balance, stand and understand how a wave moves underneath the board. Someone with more experience might work on paddling, positioning, wave selection, turns or becoming less dependent on an instructor.
Our lessons last a maximum of two hours from the moment you arrive at the beach. If you're using our pick-up service from Kuta, the drive to Tanjung Aan does not eat into your surf lesson. Neither does it make much sense to spend the first twenty minutes of your session exhausting yourself with a long paddle to the break when a boat can take you there.
The idea is simple: use your energy where you came to use it. On the waves.
Is Tanjung Aan suitable for children?
Yes, when the conditions are appropriate. We offer kids surf lessons from the age of five, and younger or less confident children can experience their first waves together with an instructor on a tandem ride.
With children, we are particularly careful about choosing the conditions. Surfing is supposed to build confidence, not prove how brave a child is. A small, manageable day can create a completely different first experience from taking a child into conditions that are technically surfable but simply too intimidating.
There is another advantage to Tanjung Aan for families: the rest of the family doesn't have to surf.
Partners, grandparents, siblings or friends can come along and stay at the beach while the lesson takes place. At our meeting point there is a beachfront restaurant where you can order local food and drinks, and there are sunbeds where you can stay afterwards.
So a surf lesson doesn't necessarily have to be a two-hour activity where half the family waits around wondering when you're coming back.
Make a beach day out of it. Surf, eat, grab a coconut and stay a little longer.
There is more to Tanjung Aan than surfing
If you only arrive with a surfboard, take the boat out and leave immediately afterwards, you'll miss part of what makes Tanjung Aan worth visiting.
The bay itself consists of two neighbouring beaches with noticeably different sand textures. The area is also connected to the cultural landscape of Mandalika, whose name comes from the Sasak legend of Princess Mandalika. The annual Bau Nyale tradition, held along this part of Lombok's south coast, commemorates the princess through a centuries-old tradition in which people gather at the coast to catch nyale, sea worms that appear seasonally.
It is another reminder that South Lombok's beaches weren't created for tourism and surfing. People lived, fished, travelled and gathered along this coastline long before anyone arrived with a board bag.
That doesn't mean you need a history lesson before you're allowed to paddle out. It simply helps to remember that you're visiting someone's home.
Be friendly. Respect the beach. Don't leave rubbish behind. Be patient when something works differently from what you're used to. Support the local businesses around you.
And if you're sharing the line-up with people who surf these waves every week rather than once during a two-week holiday, behave accordingly.
A little respect gets you surprisingly far in Indonesia.
Tanjung Aan or Gerupuk: where should you surf?
If you spend any time researching surfing around Kuta Lombok, you'll quickly come across both names. They aren't interchangeable.
Tanjung Aan is a beach you can drive directly to from Kuta. From there, the surf break lies offshore and we take a boat to reach it. Gerupuk is further east and is both a village and a large bay containing several different surf breaks. Boat access is a normal part of surfing there as well. Some of Gerupuk's breaks can work for progressing beginners, while others require considerably more experience.
You don't need to decide which one is “better”. There isn't a universally better surf spot.
There is only the spot that works better for your level and the conditions that day.
Most of our Lombok lessons take place at Tanjung Aan because we like the combination of accessible waves, the beach environment and the relatively short journey from Kuta. If conditions or your surfing level make Gerupuk the better option, we can consider surfing there instead.
That's part of the advantage of being in South Lombok. You have options.

Staying in Kuta and surfing Tanjung Aan
You don't need your own scooter or surfboard to make this work.
If you're staying in central Kuta Lombok, we can pick you up from your hotel and drive to Tanjung Aan. We can also arrange to meet at Mandalika Bazaar, or you can make your own way to the beach.
Once you're there, we provide the equipment needed for your lesson, including a surfboard, leash and long-sleeve UV-protective rash guard. Bring comfortable, preferably tight-fitting swimwear, a towel and sunscreen. After the session, fresh water is available to rinse off before you settle down for something to eat or head back to Kuta.
And don't rush back simply because the lesson is finished. One of the nicest things about Tanjung Aan is that there really isn't much reason to.
Our biggest tip for surfing Lombok?
Don't come to Lombok looking for one perfect surf spot. Come prepared to move. South Lombok's coastline is full of bays, reefs, headlands and surf breaks facing slightly different directions. Wind, swell and tide can make one place work while another doesn't. Tanjung Aan might be exactly what you need one morning, while another day points you towards Gerupuk.
That is part of the fun.
Surfing here is not just about catching waves. It is the drive out of Kuta with boards in the car, arriving at the beach, checking the ocean, loading the boards onto a local boat, paddling for a wave with the green hills of South Lombok behind you and coming back hungry enough that almost anything from the warung tastes amazing.
That's the version of Lombok we like. And we think it's a pretty good way to spend a morning.
